Moviment ghall-Ambjent, Friends of the Earth (Malta), formerly 'Zghazagh ghall-Ambjent', has been active in the environmental field since 1985. The group was first set up as an umbrella organisation with representatives from various youth and environment groups, but soon developed into a committee of activists.

The group started to gain popularity and media coverage in November of 1985 when members of the group were attacked during a protest against developments on the beaches and in the countryside. Since then a series of eye catching activities were organised in order to inform the public of environmental threats. In 1991 Moviment ghall-Ambjent became part of Friends of the Earth International, a network that includes groups from 67 countries.

The stance of the movement is for strong sustainability which is informed by "deep" ecological values. Moviment ghall-Ambjent, Friends of the Earth (Malta), has concentrated its energies on the issues of : land use, energy, pollution, and waste. The group has been successful in opposing many of the major developments which threatened to deplete Malta's countryside and coast.

Since 1994 the movement has put on the public agenda the threats posed by tourism to the Maltese islands, and has organised conferences, workshops, and meetings wherein those involved with the tourism industry have cooperated to achieve higher environmental standards in order to improve tourism destinations.
The group has been participating in the Sustainable Europe campaign which involved the preparation of a published report that will suggest sustainability parameters for Malta.

Moviment ghall-Ambjent is a national environmental group affiliated with the internationally recognised non-governmental organisation (NGO) Friends of the Earth International.

Moviment ghall-Ambjent, Friends of the Earth (Malta), is an independent organisation, distinct from any political party. It is not directly affiliated with any other environmental group in Malta, however, it has worked with a number of other NGO’s on particular issues of common concern.
