Agriculture & Biodiversity

Fundamentally, agriculture is the fabric that gave birth and shaped our culture. The seasonal rhythms that came with agriculture shaped our societies, religions, art and culture.

Land Use

The Maltese Islands (area 314km2) are populated by approximately 380,000 residents (1210/km2) and are visited by about 1 million tourists annually. On the island of Malta some 21% of the land area is built up.

Pollution

Malta has no large scale chemical industry. The major sources of pollution are : the power stations; the waste tips; sewage outflows; motor vehicles and the construction industry.

Transport

Friends of the Earth is working for a more sustainable transport system that will rely less on the private motor car and give more priority to public transport, bicycles and pedestrian zones.

Packaging and Waste

This campaign is aimed at sensitising the authorities, as well as the general public, to the problems related to toxic waste and excessive packaging. One of the main objectives is to present viable alternatives to certain un-recyclable and non-biodegradable packaging material currently in use.

Hunting

Every year millions of migratory birds are shot or caught while making their twice-yearly passage over the islands. In trying to make a valid evaluation of the problem we are faced with difficulties due to the largely inaccurate data available concerning the number of shooters and trappers and the size of their catches
