Friends of the Earth Malta, Moviment Graffitti and Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar are highly concerned regarding Mr. Polidano's applications to develop supermarkets in ODZ. Now it is the turn in Zabbar. Earlier this month, MEPA has published another application (PA7244/06) by the same Mr. Polidano. This application concerns the development of another supermarket in Zabbar on a stretch of agricultural land in ODZ, right next to several green houses.
“If the supermarket development is given the green light, this would impact negatively on the environment of that area and will also have an impact on such greenhouses as it will cast shadows that interfere with the availability of sunlight.†“Application(PA7617/06) by Polidano for the development of a supermarket in MOSTA was turned down immediately by MEPA late in April mainly due to the fact that this application concerned an ODZ development. MEPA should abide by its own regulations on planning and environment matters and reject proposals that fall outside the development schemes,†“Malta sustainability is lacking behind. Our country is losing a lot of land to rampant development. This situation is totally unsustainable, resulting in a lot of environmental damage and lack of adequate open places.†The NGOs concluded that “the approval of this application should be out of the question.†|
