While new measures and commitments on fighting global warming are taken at the political level and while scientists and innovators are researching new technology to lower greenhouse gas emissions, individuals also have an important role to play. Coming from a small country like Malta, one might argue that even on a national level we can do very little to help with the global effort of reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases. These believes are even more entrenched on an individual level whereby individuals feel that they can do nothing to contribute. In reality though, each and every citizen on Earth has an equal responsibility in combating climate change, for their own sakes but also to provide future generations with a habitable planet. By changing our habits a little and becoming more conscious of how much energy we use, each and every individual can successfully limit their own carbon footprint and - as an extra bonus - save a little money on energy bills. This makes even more sense now that the electricity surcharge has gone up by 95%. In attitude surveys gathered in Europe there seems to be a growing awareness among people of climate change and its causes. In one survey 85% of the respondents said they were either fairly or very convinced that the Earth’s climate and weather patterns were changing; whereas seven out of ten thought climate change is a result of human activities. The problem is that some people don’t see the link between simple actions like switching on a light bulb and the environmental impact of this. And others do not believe that they can make a difference by taking individual action. Yet the truth is that significant changes can be done with little effort and investment. |
